Cut it out!
Wake up your home with windows and doors.
by Beth Gibbins, ReStore Outreach Coordinator
This week is an exercise in bringing the outdoors in. After a long, crappy winter I think we all deserve a little extra outdoor exposure.
I
don't think many of us have ever really considered adding or changing
the size of doors or windows in our home. You might be surprised how
easily you can do this kind of change to your home. (Click here for a link to a book preview that has a TON of info.)
What
was once a bare wall could be transformed into a picture window to your
garden. A regular window could morph into French doors to the back
yard. Take a walk around your house and envision all the potential!
Measure
those potential spaces and come to ReStore to check out our great
selection of patio doors and windows. What a great way to celebrate
spring in Iowa!

Let there be
CARPET!
by Beth Gibbins, ReStore Outreach
Coordinator
After years and years of people
looking for carpet at ReStore (with very rare success) I am excited to announce
that ReStore is now carrying room size carpet remnants and padding!
Last week a group of volunteers
from Central College (Go Dutch!) and our Manager, Dana, dismantled our 'lumber'
room, rearranged some racks, took some bay doors out of commission and created a
wonderful new space. You will find 12' wide rolled carpet remnants towering
above, neatly shelved rolls of padding and a much neater, organized lumber
rack.
Styles available include frieze
(pronounced frē-ˈzā) and
plush in neutral colors. The carpet is mid to upper grade, so it will certainly
be durable!
Hope you can come in soon to see
the new 'carpet' room along with all the other great, ever-changing ReStore
merchandise!
frieze
\frē-ˈzā\
A highly twisted cut pile carpet
suited for high traffic areas. It has short fibers that tend to curl in
different directions at the surface to hide footprints and vacuum marks.
Sometimes called 'modern shag', it makes a great whole-house carpet.
plush
\ˈpləsh\
Plush carpet has
a luxurious look and features a velvety even cut pile. It is one the oldest
carpet styles, and accounts for a very large part of today's carpet
sales.

Friends Let Friends Shop at ReStore
by Beth Gibbins, ReStore Outreach Coordinator
I'm sorry to say, I need to discuss some disciplinary issues.
I want to address those of you who do not want to let your friends and
family know about ReStore. You know who you are. You don't want them to
know because they might come and buy all the good merchandise before
you can get your hands on it.
Aside from being completely self-serving, there are so many ways this logic is flawed. Let me explain.
Yes,
your friends would enjoy taking advantage of ReStore bargains, and in
turn, they might have a friend who flips houses who also starts
shopping here. (Oh no!)
THAT friend might have a friend who works at a cabinet shop that has a
storage room full of merchandise that they would like to give to
ReStore as a charitable donation. (Wait a minute, more good stuff in
the store?!) THAT friend might belong to an organization that has
several contractors who have their own project leftovers or a service
that they would like to see benefiting the mission of Habitat for
Humanity. (Look! More Habitat homes in Des Moines!)
Do you see where I'm going here?
So,
faithful ReStore shoppers, the moral of the story is this: The more you
share, the more great stuff you find in ReStore, and the more we all
benefit the mission of Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity.
Click here to share ReStore with you friends & family today!

Email Update - April 11, 2008Building Homes and Hope by Beth Gibbins, ReStore Outreach Coordinator
Recently, I
stepped away from the hustle and bustle of ReStore to experience the beauty of
the Habitat for Humanity mission.
I was privileged to join
our Family Services Director, Peggy Aguilar, in meetings to inform families that
they had been selected in the Habitat program. After we discussed time and
volunteer commitments and a brief question and answer session, we revealed their
Habitat hammer tied with blue and green ribbon and let them know they were
accepted as Partner Families. The elation and tears that follow are
contagious.
We met beautiful
people who work hard and take care of their families. Some
were originally too humble to apply for our program, and
some have escaped horrible violence in their homeland. They are all ready to
commit the time and financial responsibility to partner with Habitat and the
Greater Des Moines community to attain home-ownership.
After our
meetings, I returned to the store and marveled at the customers roaming the
aisles. I realized how important it is that we remind our shoppers that there is
much more to ReStore than a great deal on home improvement materials and
reduction of landfills. With each purchase, they are giving hope to a local
family.
Thank you again
from all of us at Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity for supporting our
mission.
